    The type of cylinder and the application in which it is used are two of the main criteria when selecting the appropriate seals and guides. Applications are referred to as light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty applications. These classifications are somewhat subjective, but the following criteria typically characterize the duty levels.

       Light Duty cylinders:

    Light duty cylinders, e.g.cylinders used for stationary equipment indoor in a factory environment, may be characterized by:

  • System pressures up to 160 bar
  • Temperature up to 70oC
  • Rare pressure peaks over system pressure
  • Minimul side load acting on guides.

       Medium Duty cylinders:

    Medium duty cylinders, e.g.Cylinders used for agricultural off-highway equipment, may be characterized by:

  • System pressures up to 250bar
  • Temperature up to 90oC
  • Moderate pressure peaks over system pressure.
  • Moderate side loads acting on guides

      Heavy Duty cylinders:

    Heavy duty cylinders, e.g.Cylinders used Earthmoving equipment and Heavy Machineries, may be characterized by:

  • System pressures up to 400bar
  • Temperature exceeds 110oC
  • Regular pressure peaks over system pressure
  • Heavy side loads acting on guides, usually due to heavy components and high accelerations.

Hydraulic cylinders are chosen based on the applications where they will be used, and it is further classified into a type of mounting and manufacturing type: 

  • Front Flange,
  • Both end clevis,
  • Trunnion type, 
  • Foot lug and 
  • Tie rod type.

The main factor affecting the performance and life of cylinders are Hydraulic seals, so choosing hydraulic seals is very important for cylinders’ performance. The factors which will affect the hydraulic seals are Pressure of the fluid and temperature of the liquid.The main types of sealing failures are Deterioration,Extrusion, Grooving, and fracturing.


     For higher temperature applications, ethylene-propylene or Viton seals are available to operate to 350° F. For even higher temperatures, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based materials are available that can withstand up to 500° F.
